Marco Island finally got the green light from the EPA for asbestos cleanup at a local park. Asbestos was found at the site after a construction crew was given permission to store unused parts at the park.
Marco Island has finally received permission from the Environmental Protection Agency as well as the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to remove asbestos from a local park. The contractor was given the green light to begin removing the piping insulation from the Veterans Community Park; the work should begin at the end of this week. The asbestos was left over material from when a construction company used the area to store old equipment and materials.
Part of the park has already undergone the abatement, while two more of the parcels have yet to be worked on. One of the parcels in the 11 acre park still contain old piping that has asbestos insulation attached; the piping will be sealed and removed prior to the soil being dug up and sealed. The city states that there is no danger of asbestos exposure, which can cause emphysema and a form of lung cancer called mesothelioma, and that the work will be carried out by a contractor licensed to handle the dangerous material.
