Minnesota Couple Must Pay for Asbestos Removal

A Minnesota couple is now responsible for expensive asbestos abatement on their property. The ministers did not know that the plot of land they built their dream house on was tainted with asbestos.

A couple in Minnesota was astounded when they received a bill from the city for almost $90,000 for cleaning up asbestos on their property. The couple bought the plot of land in 1999 with a clean deed and no mention of the toxic material that could be found in the soil. In 2004, the couple began to build their dream home on the lot; as construction began, asbestos was found in the soil. The city held up construction for a time, then allowed the building to continue after the asbestos was cleaned up.

Now the two, who live on $1600 a month from their posts as local ministers, are facing a bill from the city for the clean up. The original cost was $87,000; the couple’s lawyer got the price down to $81,000, with the first installment of $7,000 due in January. The asbestos was dumped at the site by a local construction company working on roads in the area, work that is normally funded by the city. Since they were responsible for the debris in the lot, the couple feels the city should have paid for the cleanup.
