The vermiculite mine in Salt Lake City was thought for years to be a safe, local job for many. Only decades later have workers been informed that the material they worked with is asbestos.

Workers from the Intermountain Vermiculite plant in Salt Lake City didn’t know that the jobs they held would come back to haunt them decades later. The people at the mine and adjoining plant were told they were working with vermiculite, a benign material that paid the bills. Now, workers from as long as 45 years ago are realizing that the material is a form of deadly asbestos, and the exposure to the material is most likely responsible for their respiratory illnesses.

Workers from the mine and processing plant are now coming forward with cases of asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer. Both asbestosis and emphysema have no proven method of effective treatment. Mesothelioma can be treated as a form of cancer, but is often times too advanced at the time of detection to be effective. Now the people that have been affected by these diseases are looking for someone to accept the blame of exposing them to a hazardous form of asbestos for all those years.
