Asbestos and its related diseases are becoming better known as the material makes the news. Many people see the hazardous substance as an arms length danger, which in some cases is not true.
When asbestos diseases come to mind, many people think of those workers that handle the material, such as miners and shipyard workers. Though people holding positions that require exposure repeatedly do have a higher chance of developing an asbestos-related disease, such as emphysema or mesothelioma, simple home repairs can also lead to exposure. Many of the illnesses related to asbestos occur when the material is disturbed and the fibers are inhaled. The fibers stick to the lining of the lungs, keeping the tissue from absorbing oxygen. The result can be a deadly form of cancer called mesothelioma, which is often incurable at the time it is diagnosed.
Many older homes still contain asbestos, since it was used as a common form of fire retardant or insulation. When a homeowner does minor repairs to plumbing, insulation, ceilings, tiles or even drywall, they can run the risk of exposing themselves and their family to the dangers of asbestos. A professional should do any repairs being done to items that can contain asbestos, or the repair site should be tested for asbestos prior to work being done
