Asbestos Cleanup Causes Stir

Sioux City residents are not complaining that cleanup of an asbestos pile will be commencing. The concern is that the job, which is costing the city almost $40,000, went to an out-of-state contractor.

The debris pile at the former site of the Livestock Exchange Building needed to be removed by a professional, since it contained asbestos, and everyone in the city agreed on that. The concern that has accompanied the abatement, however, is the fact that the contract has gone to an out-of-state company. Residents and some city officials are mad that the work is going to a Nebraska-based company, though the headquarters are located on a street that runs through Iowa.

Those in Sioux City are concerned for two reasons, the first being that the money should go to a local business since it is coming from city funds. The second concern is that a company based in another state may not have the qualifications, or the follow-up service, that a local company would have. The contract was given to Howard R. Green after local companies stated they would need the same company to oversee the work being done. The city decided to give the contract directly to Green to reduce cost of the asbestos abatement.
