A Montgomery County developer has dropped its plans of building a student center for West Virginia University. The site was dropped after it was found that the previous business dumped asbestos at the site.
Kane Core has dropped plans for a 19-story student center affiliated with the West Virginia University after it was found that the site contains asbestos. The prior tenant of the vacant lot may have dumped asbestos there, which would boost the cost of the development out of budget. The only way that the project could continue was to raise the property taxes in order to pay for abatement of the site. Though the developer indicated they would be willing to do this, a citizen group petitioned to have the plans dropped.
The site does not pose an immediate health threat to neighbors as long as the asbestos contained in the soil is not disturbed. Kane Core stated that they would abide by all regulations concerning the hazardous material, but nearby residents did not want to take the chance with a mineral that can lead to emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer. The developer has offered to sell the site, but no offers have been made at this time.
