A Delaware contractor was just finishing pleading guilty to mishandling asbestos at the Salinas County Courthouse when toxic fumes were released into a courtroom. The courthouse has, once again, been shut down.
The Salinas County Courthouse had finished proceedings where the contractor in charge was accused of mishandling asbestos. Two days later, the same contractor authorized work that released toxic fumes into the courtroom of Judge Maldonado, one of the employees of the courthouse that is suing the same contractor over asbestos exposure. Roofing work, which should have been scheduled after hours, was being performed on the temporary housing of the courtrooms; the toxic fumes, which were to be directed away from the sealed buildings, was instead pumped strait into them.
The Salinas Courthouse has been the setting for a struggle over asbestos. A couple of incidents have exposed employees to asbestos dust over the past few months, a gross mishandling of the potentially deadly material. Judge Maldonado is one of several employees suing the contractor for health problems related to asbestos exposure. Asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma can all result from breathing in asbestos particles; each of the workers suing has incurred respiratory problems over the last few months, none of which have conclusively been diagnosed at this time.
