Tunnel Employees Getting Asbestos Testing

The Architect of the Capitol approved medical testing for those employees working in the Capitol Power Plant Tunnel. The employees had raised concerns after high levels of asbestos were detected.

Ten employees of the Capitol Hill Tunnels petitioned the Architect of the Capitol to foot the bill for medical testing after they had learned they had been exposed to high levels of asbestos. After the initial denial, the ten workers sent a request to Congress for the testing. The Architect agreed to pay for treatment sought at a local clinic instead of the National Center for Vermiculite and Asbestos-Related Cancer in Detroit. The workers will also be compensated for time off during the testing and treatment.

The Tunnel workers have been involved in a lengthy battle with the Architect after high levels of asbestos were detected in their workplace. Asbestos exposure can lead to respiratory problems including emphysema and mesothelioma. An aggressive form of lung cancer, mesothelioma can often be fatal at the time of detection, since the condition can take years to manifest. Some of the workers are already experiencing shortness of breath and low blood oxygen levels. Mesothelioma occurs when asbestos particles are breathed into the lungs and become stuck there, keeping the lungs from absorbing oxygen.
