The inconvenience of having asbestos abatement in their front yard drove many Parkway Village residents to complain. A new development is driving the insult yet further; the residents will now have to pay part of the bill.
Residents of the Parkway Village, a co-op that used to be home to U.N. employees, were disgruntled about the asbestos abatement, taking place outside their doors. A normally quiet, upscale neighborhood was torn apart for a month as the EPA and the FBI investigated allegations that asbestos had been illegally dumped at the site. While the closed roads and noise were a bother, the situation was only going to get worse.
At a meeting over the weekend it was revealed to residents of the exclusive building that they were going to be responsible for at least part of the bill. The government paid for the investigation and abatement, but now the residents would have to pay them back. Most of the residents were not in fear of asbestos exposure, which can lead to respiratory problems including emphysema, asbestosis and an aggressive form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. Many of the neighbors were fearful, instead, that the hurt would hit their wallets, which, in the end, it did.
