SC Dump to Accommodate Asbestos

A sleepy South Carolina town used to be a treasure for those looking to get away from industrialization. Now, the area will be privy to a new dump that will be used for asbestos.

The small town of Jedburg, S.C. was the ideal place for those looking to have a little bit of country close to the city. When a large grocery store was on the agenda for development, the city turned out and tried to get the plan turned down. The city approved the construction, promising that it would be the only industry in the area. A new plan, however, has a city dump going in – a dump that would be used as a site for old asbestos.

Residents are set for a battle to keep the dump from becoming a reality. Along with asbestos, the dump would house animal carcasses, making the area not only potentially dangerous, but smelly as well. While city officials are assuring residents that any asbestos dumped would be safe, some are still wondering how the deadly material can ever be totally harmless. Asbestos can lead to many types of respiratory diseases if the material is disturbed and breathed in. Emphysema and mesothelioma, a deadly type of lung cancer, can all be linked to asbestos exposure.
