A new study being conducted in Hawaii may have long lasting effect on the world of asbestos-related diseases. The team is asking why some exposed to asbestos become sick, while others don’t.
The shipyards of Pearl Harbor are a great place to conduct asbestos research. One team of researchers has taken the area as their study field in order to answer a long standing questions in the field of asbestos cancer; why do some people get sick, while many others don’t? The team thinks that they have discovered the answer in a virus that can be found in victims suffering from mesothelioma, an aggressive form of lung cancer linked to asbestos exposure.
The presence of the virus denotes that a person is more susceptible to contracting mesothelioma after asbestos exposure occurs. Mesothelioma is caused when a person breathes in asbestos fibers, which stick to the lining of the lungs. This kills the tissue there, resulting in the slow suffocation of the victim. Mesothelioma can take years to manifest, proving that the research in Hawaii will need to be ongoing as people develop the disease. The preliminary results of the research find that only 5% of people repeatedly exposed to asbestos develop mesothelioma; of those afflicted, 90% have the virus being studied.
