Asbestos License Given Up by Man

An Ohio man gave up his asbestos license after 15 years of work in the field. The relinquishing was part of a deal made by all parties to curb any further action against the contractor.

A man in Columbus, Ohio voluntarily gave up his license to work with asbestos in a deal reached between him and the court that had suspended the license in 2005. The contractor had been working on the Columbus High School during renovations, and sent an unlicensed worker to inspect the job during asbestos removal. While the contractor could have fought the courts, he admitted that the legal costs of the trial would have not been worth retaining the license.

Asbestos is a hazardous material that all states require a license and special training to handle. If the material is mishandled, asbestos can break apart and be breathed in by those around. This can lead to respiratory issues, including asbestosis, emphysema and a form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. The unlicensed worker ended up releasing asbestos into the air, causing the building owner to bring in an asbestos cleanup crew. No one reported any immediate danger in the area.
