The city of Montgomery, Alabama is being held responsible for public endangerment after a building containing asbestos was not properly demolished. The city will pay a fine for the violation.
The city of Montgomery hoped that, with the demolition of the Jasmine Garden Apartments, all the problems posed by the building would be demolished as well. It was not until after the building was gone that the Department of Environmental Management stepped in and notified the city that the building had been improperly handled due to the high levels of asbestos contained in the building. The DEM stated that the city did not properly test for asbestos, and that due to the oversight workers and neighboring residents may have been exposed to elevated levels of asbestos fibers.
Though the workers and residents of the area are not showing preliminary symptoms, asbestos exposure can lead to a multitude of respiratory illnesses, including emphysema and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a result of asbestos fibers sticking to the lining of the lungs, keeping them from absorbing oxygen. The tissue dies, resulting in the aggressive form of lung cancer; the condition can take years to manifest and is often times untreatable when diagnosed.
