A D.C. music school was shut down again after an arson attempt last week. Though the school had reopened, it was closed this week due to exposed asbestos found during the cleanup.

A suspected arson attempt shut down the St. Albans Music School last week after part of the rehearsal and storage building were burned in the attempt. The school had expected to reopen last Thursday until asbestos was found during the cleanup. Some of the insulating asbestos was exposed after the fire, and disposal of the hazardous material has delayed the school from opening its doors. The fire resulted in loosing a few musical instruments and some sheet music, but no one was injured in the blaze since the new term had not started.

The asbestos in the school had not posed a threat until the fire, school officials report. The material, which can lead to respiratory issues, normally is not a problem when it is left alone. Once the material has been disturbed, however, it can break apart and be breathed in. This can lead to emphysema, asbestosis or a form of lung cancer known as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can takes years to develop, and may be too advanced for treatment once diagnosed. Health officials said that there was no immediate threat since the school was empty at the time of the fire.
