Pennsylvania Man Fined Over Asbestos

A business owner in Pennsylvania is being fined over the improper handling of asbestos during demolition. The man allegedly disregarded disclosed procedures for removing the hazardous material.

When the Department of Environmental Protection found out that a building owner was going to demolish a roller skating rink in Foster Township, the DEP provided information regarding the safe removal of asbestos. The state and national regulations for removing asbestos are in place to assure that the potentially deadly material is handled and disposed of in a safe manner. The building owner took no notice of the regulations, and is now facing a fine due to improper handling and disposal.

After demolition was complete, the DEP found that no notice had been given of the work being done, nor were safety procedures followed. The man is now facing a fine of more than $40,000, although he maintains that he followed all directions that the DEP gave him in connection with the demolition. If mishandled or improperly disposed of, asbestos can lead to respiratory diseases including asbestosis and mesothelioma, a deadly form of lung cancer. The building owner is appealing the decision, stating that he was not notified that the DEP had reached a final judgment on the case.
