Courthouse Asbestos Results in Lawsuit

The Salinas County Courthouse is normally a place for lawsuits; the newest lawsuit, however, is a result of the courthouse itself. A judge and workers from the building are filing suit over the presence of asbestos.

The Salinas County Courthouse has been dealing with asbestos problems in the past year. After asbestos was found during renovations, part of the north wing was shut down to employees and work was moved to an adjoining office. After the wing opened up, asbestos dust was found in the air ducts during cleaning, closing the wing down again. September saw the head asbestos consultant quitting after a new project manager was hired, and all work had to be halted until a new consultant could be found.

The newest development is a lawsuit filed by a judge and workers of the courthouse, after all involved starting experiencing asbestos-related respiratory problems. Since the conditions are in the early stages, the exact condition has not been named, although emphysema, asbestosis and mesothelioma are all possibilities. One of the most serious diseases related to asbestos exposure is mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer that can takes years to fully develop and is often untreatable when diagnosed.
