Asbestos Still a Threat

Though asbestos was banned in the 1980s, the material still poses a threat to the public. Asbestos may be even more dangerous now, since many people underestimate the presence of the substance.

American admitted that asbestos could be harmful to the public’s health. After the link between asbestos exposure and respiratory conditions, such as emphysema and mesothelioma, was made, the material was banned in the US . Asbestos and items containing asbestos could still be imported to the US , but it could not be mined or manufactured in America . In essence, it was the right thing to do.

But many people are now being exposed to asbestos, and developing health problems from the exposure, due to thinking they are safe. Remodeling a home, tearing down a roof, even repairing plumbing within the home can lead to asbestos exposure. The majority of homes in the US were built prior to the ban on asbestos; as such, asbestos can be found in one form or another in almost all homes built prior to 1980. More cases of mesothelioma, a form of aggressive lung cancer, are reported each month in the US . Some of the cases are from years of exposure; others are from recent exposure in the home and workplace. The public should be aware that asbestos could still be a problem.
