Part of Boston’s Transportation Authority agency was fined almost $250,000 after they failed to clean up asbestos. Part of the fine will go to a local group that helps people suffering from asbestos-related diseases.
When the South Boston Power Plant was decommissioned, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority was in charge of cleaning the area. The MBTA failed to notify the Department of Environmental Protection, though, that asbestos was present at the site, and even worse, they did not seal the site as clean up was taking place. New tests have revealed that there is still asbestos present, which resulted in the MBTA being fined at least $230,000.
More than half of the fine will go to the South Boston Community Health Center’s Asthma Program, which helps people in the area suffering from not only asthma, but also other respiratory diseases that can be caused by asbestos. Asbestos has been known to cause asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer. The center does treat victims of these diseases, which makes the fine a benefit to residents that were affected by asbestos exposure. The other $100,000 will go toward a penalty, which could increase if the MBTA does not clean the area in the allotted time.Article Added November 17th, 2006 - Print This Story - Bookmark This Story
