After more human remains were found at the World Trade Center site, workers there raised concern that other dangers, such as asbestos, may still be present. Work at the site was halted until test results could be reviewed.
Workers at the site of the World Trade Center brought up the concern that more than just human remains may be present at the site. More than five years after the Towers fell, human remains were found nearby in a manhole, causing work to stop. Though work resumed, those on site protested that other materials, like asbestos, could be present as well. All work on the site was halted and will not resume until are and soil test results come back.
Workers at the site directly after 9/11 have already begun to develop respiratory problems, including emphysema. Some have even been diagnosed to be in the early stages of mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer linked to asbestos exposure. Considering the problems that have already occurred, current workers are not required to continue work until after test results come back. If the area tests positive for asbestos, a special team will be brought in to complete some of the work, while the rest of the workers will be supplied with safety equipment.
