As an Iowa school gets ready to have asbestos removed, many parents are protesting that the school kept the work a secret. Some are asking why the work is not being done while the school is closed.
Parents of some Iowa high school students are enraged that asbestos removal at their children’s school will be completed during normal hours. While school officials say that all safety precautions will be taken while the hazardous material is being removed, some parents are asking why the work is not being done when the school is closed. Renovations are due to start on part of the Valley High School this spring; prior to that, the asbestos in the building needs to be removed.
The parents feel the school did not disclose the situation in the proper way, letting parents know ahead of time of the work being done. The fact that a holiday break is approaching has been brought up, with some parents wondering why the work was not scheduled during that time while students and staff are not present. Asbestos can cause a medley of health problems, including emphysema and mesothelioma, is breathed in. A form of aggressive lung cancer, mesothelioma can takes years to manifest, and is often times untreatable once found. School officials have set up a meeting for parents and board representatives to discuss the renovations.
