Tunnel Workers File Complaint Over Asbestos

The self proclaimed “tunnel rats” of the Capitol are filing a complaint against the Architect of the Capitol. They allege that they were retaliated against after telling Congress and the media that the tunnels contained high levels of asbestos.

Workers in the tunnels beneath the US Capitol have many things to complain about. But a new lawsuit alleges that the workers have also been retaliated against by their boss, the Architect of the Capitol, due to speaking to the media and Congress about the asbestos exposure they face each day on the job. Reports have shown that the Architect knew there were high levels of asbestos in the tunnels, but that the employees were not made aware, nor were they given protective gear to use when at work.

Some of the tunnel rats have developed asbestos-related diseases, including a form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. Some workers are saying that they are dealing with threats, harassment and indifferent responses from officials in the Architect office since workers have begun to speak to the press and to take advantage of the medical treatment. Unfortunately, some of the workers have been exposed to asbestos for over 20 years, and a few are in the last incurable stages of mesothelioma.
