New Courthouse Would Solve Asbestos Issue

The Salinas County Courthouse continues to be haunted by asbestos issues as renovations continues. Some are saying that the money used for these renovations should be allotted to just build a new courthouse.

Money had been set aside for new construction on the Salinas County Courthouse. Instead of doing so, however, the funds were used to construct a new administration building next door, and left over funds were used to try and update the existing courthouse. Since that decision was made, and renovations began on the building, the project has been hampered by the presence of asbestos. Due to the hazardous material, the building has been shut down, employees have been relocated, and more funds have been thrown into the building for abatement and testing.

The newest development was the resignation of the asbestos consultant on the job over the assignation of a new project manager. Since then, a new asbestos consultant is being found and renovations are, once again, on hold until a consultant can be found. Some residents and a few officials are asking that the courthouse be once again approved for demolition and for a new building to be erected to make sure that asbestos does not continue to be a problem.
