Asbestos Delays Arena Opening

A Durham, NC arena will not open on schedule due to the discovery of asbestos. The ice hockey arena went through an audit to open, and failed due to insulation containing asbestos.

The Blackstock arena was gearing up for all the chilly weather in North Carolina by opening its doors early this year. Instead, the opening was delayed due to a technical audit conducted in September and reviewed last week. The audit showed a moderate amount of asbestos present in the building’s insulation; enough to cause the arena’s doors to remain shut this week. The problem is being addressed, and a contractor has already accepted the abatement job for the building.

The abatement could take only days, allowing for the arena to open next weekend, just in time for the Halloween rush of ice skaters. The discovery of asbestos was not deemed a health issue, since none of the potentially hazardous material had been disturbed during work done in the basement. Asbestos is a normally safe material that only becomes a health concern when it is moved or disturbed, causing it to break apart into airborne particles. Breathing in asbestos fibers can lead to respiratory conditions such as emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer linked with asbestos exposure.
