The Board of Education had a lot to say at a Council of Elected Officials meeting this week. The Board stated that the continuing problem of asbestos in schools would need to be addressed soon.
Though the Board of Education is nominally responsible for all asbestos issues in local schools, the Board in Connecticut is asking for help from the Council of Elected Officials. Since taking care of asbestos, especially in large buildings like schools, can be expensive, the director of finance appealed to the state for help in eradicating asbestos in Connecticut schools. Asbestos has been a large problem in the state, since many buildings still in use as schools are dated from the late 19th or early 20th century, when asbestos was commonly used.
Asbestos is normally not a problem when in use; it is when the material is disturbed, such as during renovations or construction, that asbestos can become harmful. The material breaks into airborne fibers that can be breathed in, leading to many different types of respiratory diseases including a form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. Schools are often hardest hit, since abatement, or asbestos removal, cannot occur during normal hours due to the safety of the students.
