Asbestos Removed During Classes

Many schools have been confronted with asbestos problems this past summer. While most schools shut down or relocate classes to accommodate the removal of the substance, one school in New Jersey is completing the removal during class time.

Finding asbestos during renovations at schools is nothing new; most of the time, discovery of the material happens during summer months, and the school completes abatement before classes. In the worst-case scenario, classes may be delayed, or students may be moved until the asbestos can be removed. But the Robert Waters School decided to complete abatement, or asbestos removal, while classes were in session without relocating the students.

The removal of the potentially hazardous material from the basement of the school was not discussed with parents, who first heard of the work when a local newspaper interviewed them about the situation. The school maintains that notices were posted on the school doors notifying parents of the abatement. Asbestos exposure can result in respiratory diseases, including a form of lung cancer known as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers are breathed into the lungs; the lungs cannot absorb oxygen, and the tissue there dies. Mesothelioma is often times not detected until the case is terminal, with the victim suffocating to death over a period of years.
