The push to complete asbestos work on the Salinas County Courthouse has caused the lead asbestos consultant to quit. The new development will move project completion to November at the earliest.

The Salinas County Courthouse has been the backdrop for an ongoing battle with asbestos. After the hazardous material was found during renovations during the summer, all normal business was moved from the north wing of the building to avoid employee exposure. Since that point, more asbestos has been found and tests continue to turn up concerning levels of airborne asbestos fibers. A new project manager was brought in to complete abatement within a month, a feat that the consultant said was impossible to achieve safely.

After much discussion, the manager agreed that the work would be completed in the time period needed, and the asbestos consultant quit. The new development means that the work will not be completed prior to mid-November, regardless of abatement time. He was quoted at saying that he hopes the work is completed quickly, in the interest of the county, but he could not agree to the work in the allotted time frame due to safety concerns. A new asbestos consultant is being searched for, with no abatement work commencing until one is found.
