Asbestos Dump “Stupid” Plan

An old rubber company in Taunton has produced tons of asbestos that need a final resting place. One plan is to dump it in the city landfill, with only six feet of earth to protect residents from exposure.

The New Jersey Rubber Company produced more than just tires and hoses; as the building was demolished it produced an estimated 2,000 tons of asbestos that now needs to be contained. One plan is to bury the hazardous material in the local city landfill, a plan that many residents and city officials are calling “stupid.” The City Council had not received notice of the plan until it was presented to the Board of Health, which oversees the landfill proposed.

One official was opposed to the idea due to the fact that there are landfills nearby that are set aside for hazardous waste, including asbestos. Others state that the dumping would limit the further use of the residential landfill, creating a problem for public waste companies. The amount of space needed to contain the large amount of asbestos would be roughly the size of a football field, with the material being buried six feet below ground. Though residents will not be able to vote on the plan, city officials are assuring residents that their protest will be heard in the votes of the officials themselves.
