Crack Down on Contractors Over Asbestos

As asbestos concerns are being raised in the media, many homeowners are left wondering if their contractors are testing for the hazardous material. Contractors are now getting fines and being stripped of their licenses over asbestos.

Most homeowners believe that, if a professional comes in and completes work on a home, that the process is safe. When work is done in attics, with flooring or ceiling materials, though, there is an added concern over the presence of asbestos. Some contractors are not aware that the work they are doing may be putting themselves and the homeowners at risk of asbestos exposure. Others feel that in an attempt to expedite the work, asbestos testing and proper removal should be looked over.

Local and national government is looking at the situation as a growing problem. Handy men and small contractors can put people at risk if asbestos is present in the workspace; the hazard can grow if the material is not disposed of properly. A contractor can accrue fines, and even lose their license over the matter, whether they were aware of asbestos or not. Areas that are considered high risk, such as attics, floors, ceilings or insulated walls, should always be tested by a professional prior to extensive work being done.
