Accident Imports Asbestos to Project

The Citadel Plaza in Kansas City has had its share of asbestos problems from the beginning. Just when the project looked clear to resume, though, it was found that asbestos had been brought to the site.

Normally if a construction site has asbestos problems, officials try to get rid of it. That is what has been going on for the past few months at the Citadel Plaza project in Kansas City after asbestos-laden houses were demolished to make way for the project. Just as construction and abatement crews thought they were done, though, dirt was brought in for the foundation of the building and dumped at the site. It was found the first day that the dirt brought in was riddle with asbestos, causing yet another headache for workers involved.

Since the project had already gone over budget due to preliminary abatement, workers jumped at the sign that told of free fill dirt, delivered anywhere in the city. It was not known until later that the dirt was from a different project, which had violated the Clean Air Act by removing the soil, containing asbestos. The company contracted originally for the prior abatement will complete the new abatement, with work being halted yet again until soil and air tests confirm that the site is safe.
