A school in Ohio was hoping to open this week after renovations released asbestos into buildings on campus. After tests, though, the school announced that it would remain closed for at least another week.

The Valley View Middle School in Ohio was hoping to reopen this week after repairs to the roof released asbestos into the buildings on campus. After more tests were conducted, though, it was established that the presence of asbestos would keep the school shut longer. The Middle School shares a cafeteria with the Germantown Elementary School, which was one of the buildings affected by the asbestos exposure. Students at the Elementary school will be allowed to return to class this week, although they will be eating their lunch at their desks in class.

Asbestos can be found in many buildings built prior to the 1970s, where it was used as a form of insulation or as a fireproofing material. Normally, harmless, asbestos can become a hazard if it is disturbed during maintenance or repairs to parts of buildings containing asbestos. The material breaks into airborne fibers when disturbed, which can be breathed in, resulting in different respiratory diseases, such as asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer.
