A Florida airport was undergoing renovations when all work was ceased. The discovery of asbestos caused the work to halt until an asbestos abatement could be carried out. The city is accepting bids at this time for the project.
Two construction groups stepped up to the plate after work on the Monroe Airport was halted resulting from the discovery of asbestos. The construction was being done in order to create another terminal for the growing airport, located close to busy St. Petersburg and Tampa. All work was ceased after the discovery of asbestos in the ceiling tiles in the terminal adjoining the addition. The city narrowed bids from contractors down to two companies, which are lobbying for the contract.
Asbestos removal, or abatement, can be costly and time consuming, the main considerations for the small airport. The mayor indicated that some of the $20 million costs would be paid for by the FAA, the Florida government and by the passengers themselves. A small fee would be added on to each ticket to offset the price of the abatement for the new terminal. While many companies had applied for the contract, only two companies, one from Florida and one from South Carolina, were allowed to proceed with their bids.
