Hawaii is seeing a rise in asbestos violations over the years, causing concerns that locals are not aware of changing regulations. The state is revising awareness programs and certification in an attempt to cap the violations.
Many states are experiencing headaches with asbestos in the past few years, with many states seeing small increases in violations resulting from asbestos handling. Hawaii is one state that is trying to do something about their increase of asbestos violations, which have gone from normally one a year to five over the past 12 months. Officials in the state are saying that, as asbestos regulations are changed, many professionals handling the material cannot keep up with new requirements and needed equipment.
Hawaii has decided to go to the residents of the islands, trying to make the public aware of the dangers of handling the material. If a resident asks a contractor about asbestos and the likelihood of asbestos being present, officials hope that the professionals will think twice about mishandling the potentially hazardous material. Another problem is when homeowners themselves start renovations projects, only to stumble across asbestos in the middle of the project. By making the public more aware, Hawaii officials are hoping that 2007 will show no asbestos violations for the state.
