A Wisconsin company has been ordered to pay costs associated with asbestos violations. The company is accused of improperly removing and disposing of material containing asbestos.

A Wisconsin marina hired a local company to demolish a couple of buildings in what should have been an easy demolition job. The demolition company, however, is now being accused of improperly demolishing the structures as well as mishandling the removal of the asbestos contained there. The company was inspected multiple times during the removal, and it was witnessed that the demolition company had multiple regulation violations regarding the potentially hazardous material.

The mishandling of asbestos can be a potentially hazardous state for people and the environment. Asbestos is normally in innocuous material that only becomes dangerous when disturbed. The material breaks into airborne fibers, which can be breathed in, and lodge in the lungs. Lung tissue affected cannot absorb oxygen and dies, leading to the victim slowly suffocating to death. The result is mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer directly attributed to asbestos exposure. The demolition company maintains that residents were not in danger, and has agreed to pay the $225,000 files and charges.
