A former landfill located in the Valley Forge National Historical Park is under debate, considering that the site contains asbestos. Officials are planning a meeting for Thursday to discuss the next step.
Valley Forge park officials will be holding a meeting to discuss asbestos left in a landfill that is located within the park. The landfill, covering 112 acres of the national park, had asbestos dumped in it from the late 19th century into the 1970s. Most of the asbestos is not exposed to the air, but some of the problem material could potentially pose a threat in the future. A manufacturing company that is down County Line Road from the park area dumped most of the asbestos, but is no longer in business.
The meeting will be open to the public, and officials are requesting written plans for removal, as well as bids for the work. Oral plans will also be considered, although oral bids will not be accepted. The park is looking to start abatement immediately in order to renovate the area into public grounds, providing camping and trail areas. The abatement would involve removing the asbestos and dumping it in a secured form in another spot.
