A Tennessee building is under scrutiny after heavy rains caused the roof to cave in. Demolition was planned, until asbestos was found in the rubble. City officials are trying to compile a plan of action.
More than three months after hard rains caused a roof to fall, people in Tennessee town are concerned that the owner of the building has done nothing about the problem. Not only is the building unsightly, but also rubble that was inspected was found to contain asbestos. Town officials are concerned that the building could cause a health issue if the asbestos is not removed soon, while the building owner maintains he is trying to rectify the situation, though the going is slow since he lives in California.
While the asbestos poses no immediate threat to residents in the area, if the material is disturbed, or becomes brittle due to air exposure, then problems can follow. If asbestos becomes airborne, it can be breathed in resulting in a form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. Mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers become lodged in the lung tissue, killing the lungs and suffocating the victim. This form of cancer can take years to be detected, and is often times terminal at time of detection.
