Asbestos, a normally inane material, can become deadly if it is disturbed by renovations or improper removal. The material breaks apart, turning into fibers that can be inhaled. Once inhaled, the fibers stick to the lining of the lungs, keeping them from taking in oxygen and killing the tissue. Asbestos exposure can take years to manifest, and is often times too advanced for treatment at the time of detection. Mesothelioma, the term for this type of cancer, results in the suffocation of the victim over a period of years. School officials maintain that no students were exposed to the material.
