An Ohio company is being fined for mishandling asbestos at a Lisbon landfill. The company is charged with improper disposal and handling, while additional charges or prison time may be passed.

The Ohio division of the EPA has fined a Lisbon landfill for improper handling and disposal of asbestos. The $13,000 penalty was allotted to A&L Salvage as a result of the mishandling, which violates the Clean Air Act. The material found was from local construction and demolition sites, though it was agreed that the LLC was aware of the dumping. Four landfill inspections in 2004 showed that bags of debris containing asbestos were deposited below other items, causing the bags to break open.

As asbestos is disturbed, it becomes airborne, turning the normally safe material into a possibly deadly substance. The fibers of asbestos become lodged in the lungs, which keeps the tissue there from absorbing oxygen. The tissue dies, affecting surround tissue in the lungs; the end result is that the victim suffocates to death. This is a form of cancer called mesothelioma, which is often fatal at the time of detection. The landfill will pay the fine from 2004, and is currently adhering to it’s new permit to handle the material.
