The continuing saga of the tunnels under Capitol Hill took a turn for the better this week as asbestos abatement got under way. The site was prepared for abatement to commence this weekend.
The security tunnels under Capitol Hill are littered with a dangerous substance. Workers performing maintenance on the tunnels found asbestos in the walls and insulation in May and June, and all workers were instructed to report for medical monitoring. Since then, more asbestos has been found in the tunnels, spurring officials in the capitol to amend plans for the renovations. The tunnels are needed for maintaining water and steam to the Capitol, and are essential in the ongoing functioning of government buildings.
Officials in the Capitol have also drafted a Bill which will address funds needed for the additional work needed on the tunnels, as well as making medical monitoring and treatment available to workers exposed to the deadly material. The renovation of the tunnels was already allotted $200 million in funds; officials are trying to obtain an additional $28 million for the new work needed. A contractor has been hired to begin abatement this weekend, though spokespersons would not announce which company would be completing the asbestos removal.
