In an ironic string of events, a South Carolina Health Department building found asbestos in it’s building. The discovery came when a worker was installing an air vent in a wall, and dust was released into the building.
It may seem ironic that a Public Health Department building in South Carolina released asbestos into the air while renovations were being done. The building was undergoing some remodeling to install more air vents in the walls when a worker cut through the plaster and exposed asbestos. The asbestos was disturbed, and the dust containing the material was released through the entire building. The building was shut down, and will only reopen after it has been deemed safe.
The contamination only occurred in one of the Health Department’s buildings, so business would continue to be held in the other areas. The earliest the affected wing would open is next Monday, as health officials scurry to receive air quality test results back. The presence of asbestos in the one building, however, indicates that asbestos could be present in the other buildings, resulting in tests being performed in the unaffected areas as well. It was not clear at the time if anyone had been exposed to the asbestos other than the worker who discovered it; that worker is being tested and watched for possible complications.
