An apartment building in Oregon that was undergoing abatement ended up costing the removal company more than $15,000 in fines. The decision was made after it became clear that two companies mishandled asbestos.

Two companies in Redmond, Oregon were fined for the mishandling of asbestos removed from an apartment building. The first company, W-H-M Enterprises, owns the apartment building and knowingly hired a company that was not licensed for asbestos removal. The second company is Potter Construction, the company hired to remove asbestos, which it did even though it had no workers licensed for the job. The fines total more than $15,000, with W-H-M paying $7,200 and Potter Construction paying $8,400.

The mishandling of asbestos can lead to many problems, both for the workers and the public. If workers are not licensed or overseen by a licensed professional, they can be at risk of inhaling asbestos fibers, resulting in a multitude of respiratory problems, including mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer directly related to asbestos inhalation. Mishandling can also expose the public to the same dangers, both during abatement and afterwards if the material is not disposed of correctly.
