A Colorado man changed his plea to guilty in a case alleging the illegal dumping of asbestos. The asbestos had come from a school undergoing renovations, and the man ordered the asbestos to be dumped in a landfill.
Fort Morgan High School in Colorado was in the middle of a court case; while undergoing renovations in 2000 and 2001, asbestos removed from its buildings was illegally dumped in a local landfill. While two men from the company hired to oversee abatement had already been sent to prison and forced to pay fines, two more of the men directly involved were standing trial. Just before the court case was to be heard, one of the two men changed his plea to guilty, since he had been in charge of overseeing the abatement.
The second man is due to appear in court in October; officials are hoping he too will change his plea to guilty prior to the hearing, which would save the county money and time. Fort Morgan High was undergoing renovations when asbestos was detected. The School Board hired a local abatement company, which then removed the hazardous material and dumped it in a local landfill, violating the Clean Air Act and potentially putting the public in danger.
