After months of services being performed on the Monterey County Courthouse, the discovery of still-present asbestos has forced the County to move business from the North Wing to other parts of the building not affected.
The Courthouse in Monterey County has had its share of problems with asbestos. Over the summer, asbestos was detected and closed the building down, forcing officials to move government services to another building. Abatement was completed and the courthouse opened its doors once again. Unfortunately, spot inspections were performed after more renovations were contracted, and more asbestos was found in the building.
Asbestos exposure, often times due to construction or renovations, can lead to many different respiratory diseases, including asbestosis and emphysema. One of the worst diseases related to asbestos exposure is mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer. Mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers are breathed in, and then become lodged in the lungs. The outcome of this is that tissue in the lungs cannot absorb oxygen and die, resulting in the victim suffocating to death. Though levels of asbestos were detected, the affected North Wing was shut down and normal activity resumed in the unaffected parts of the Courthouse.
