Home Renovations Can Lead to Asbestos Exposure

Home ownership can be a blessing, with many projects to complete to make it into a home. But owners should be wary when completing home projects, as renovations can lead to asbestos exposure.

A situation that should have been an easy change to a home’s kitchen turned into a nightmare. As cabinets were ripped out of the wall, asbestos insulation was exposed and the whole family was rushed to the hospital. Home renovations are a pastime that every owner goes through, big or small. But when the work deals with walls, floors, ceilings or roofs an additional thought should be in every homeowners mind: asbestos.

Though the material can be found in many homes across America (especially in those built before the 1980s) and is safe when left alone, the material can become deadly when it is disturbed. Sawing, cutting, ripping or even hammering can begin to disrupt asbestos, which can lead to the material becoming fibrous. When doing home renovations, the best idea it to have licensed contractors complete the work. If the work will be done by the handyperson of the house, a home inspector should be brought out to test for asbestos prior to work being completed.
