In the latest turn in asbestos problems for the state of Oregon, a school in Salem has been closed due to the hazardous material. The school’s opening was delayed until next week while other plans are being made.
Oregon has had issues over the past few months with asbestos, first over a psychiatric hospital and now with a public school. Asbestos was found at Grant Community School over the summer as renovations were being carried out. The elementary school was under construction this summer when a worker drilled into the plaster wall and released asbestos into the building. After the area was cleaned, work resumed and air tests were ordered after the renovations were done. Levels of asbestos were detected and the school did not open this week to teachers; staff is currently working offsite while parents are notified of the issue.
Asbestos exposure, even in small amounts, can produce many types of different respiratory diseases, including asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer that results from asbestos exposure, and could be deadly. As asbestos fibers are breathed into the lungs, they lodge in the tissue and prohibit the lungs from absorbing oxygen. Mesothelioma can take decades to become apparent, and is often untreatable at the time of detection.
