Government Building a “Death Trap”

The UN building should be a place of peace and negotiations. But the detection, and ignoring, of asbestos in the building has created what some government officials call a “death trap.”

The outside of the UN building in New York is all that one would expect of a building housing senators and diplomats. But inside the building, the flaws of the construction can been found; the lack of fire sprinklers, old steam pipes about to explode and asbestos throughout the whole building. The combined problems are leading to what some officials are calling a death trap, a literal time bomb that could explode and release asbestos into the city.

Senators have urged the US Ambassador and UN Secretary to fast track the approval of more than $1 billion in renovations that have been set-aside for 15 years. The building would have to undergo abatement to remove the asbestos first, then would have the pipes replaced, structural improvements made and finally a sprinkler system installed in case of fire. If the building does experience a minor blast, asbestos exposure for millions of New York residents would occur. Asbestos exposure can lead to a slew of medical conditions, including asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer.
