A Texas man will be facing up to 25 years in prison after he allegedly dumped hazardous asbestos. The EPA states that any material containing asbestos needs to be disposed in a controlled fashion.

The state of Texas has convicted a man of illegally dumping asbestos and trying to cover up the dump this week. The man could face up to 25 years in prison, as well as a large fine for disposing of the hazardous material in an unsafe manner. The violation of the Clean Air Act occurred when the man’s company was demolishing a building that contained asbestos. He directed workers to dispose of the material then lied to the Department of Health’s Toxic Waste Control Division to cover up his mishandling.

By dumping the roofing shingles, which contained asbestos, in a vacant lot the company put the public in a situation where asbestos exposure could occur. Asbestos exposure can lead to asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer. While most asbestos is stable, some forms can become hazardous if disturbed. The man will be charged in November and could face a fine of more than $1 million as well as prison time.
