As demolition commenced in a New Jersey parish, asbestos was found and halted work. The asbestos had originally been buried at the site when other demolition has stirred up the material.
The New Jersey parish of St. John the Baptist has a bunch of asbestos on their hands. As work was done to a lot of land in order to prepare it for construction, asbestos that had been cleared from a nearby elementary school was uncovered. Though health officials in the area have suggested leaving the asbestos in the ground, where it will not become airborne, parish directors want to take care of the problem once and for all. Abatement bids are being accepted by the parish, which will decide which company to use in the removal of the hazardous substance.
When asbestos is disturbed, it can break into fibers that become airborne. The fibers then become a hazard as they are breathed in and lodge in the lung tissue. After this happens, the lung tissue cannot absorb oxygen and begins to die, affecting the surrounding tissue. This leads to mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer that is usually in the advanced stages of the condition at the time of diagnosis. Mesothelioma can take years to surface, and is often deadly at time of diagnosis.
