Two New Jersey men have filed a claim against a chemical company stating that they were exposed to asbestos due to negligence. The men want to receive compensation for medical expenses and mental anguish.

Two men from Independence County, NJ are suing a chemical company, an affiliate and the supervisor on site after they were exposed to asbestos. The two men were asked to remove insulation from a chemical tank, and raised concern that the tank contained asbestos. The supervisor consulted existing documents and told the men that there was no danger; an outside contractor disagreed. Samples were taken from the tanks, and the two men were told there was no asbestos present and to continue work. After the work was completed, the same supervisor informed the two men that the results were positive for asbestos.

Exposure to asbestos can lead to a number of different health problems, including asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma. If asbestos fibers are breathed in, the fibers cling to the inside of the lung lining, keeping it from absorbing oxygen. The lungs cannot function and shut down, causing the victim to suffocate. Mesothelioma is often not detected until years after exposure has occurred, and usually is too advanced for treatment. The two men were not given protective gear to shield them from breathing in asbestos fibers.
