The normally stable town of Monticello has been in an uproar over demolition in the area. The problem is not the noise; it is that residents in the area are fearful that asbestos is being released from the site.
An outraged resident of the area confronted village officials this week in Monticello. The man alleges that recent demolition in the area of the Rhulen Building has put residents at risk as asbestos is released from the site. The man claimed that work on the building was creating a cloud of asbestos dust, a potential health threat to anyone in the area. The man attended a meeting that was discussing the demolition, where he walked up to the Mayor and dropped a plastic bag containing shingles covered in the dust on the table in front of him.
The Mayor conveyed that demolition was halted in response to the concern of the residents after city officials learned there might be a health hazard. The two shingles will be tested for asbestos, but the Mayor maintained that the type of asbestos noted in the building is not the deadly type associated with mesothelioma and asbestosis. A statement from the city is expected regarding the possibility of asbestos exposure after the site tests are returned.
