Former tenants of a Colorado apartment complex have now started a class action suit against the management company. The residents of the building were forced to evacuate after asbestos was found.
Being forced from your home due to asbestos is bad enough. Not being able to retrieve your belongings, however, are grounds for a lawsuit. The residents of Highline Terrace Apartments have been through a lot since June, when renovations of the buildings exposed asbestos. The people were told they had 24 hours to take what they could carry and leave, with the management company not offering a place to go or a timeline as to when they could get their personal belongings back. For the last two months, many of the displaced residents have found other lodgings, but still have not been able to get their furniture, clothing or personal items from the site.
The buildings management stressed that the items could be contaminated with asbestos fibers, and asked residents to leave them behind for testing. After two months, no testing has been schedule and more than 50 residents have decided to sue. On top of not having their things, residents said they were exposed to asbestos even though the management company new asbestos was present. Other plaintiffs are expected to come forward over the next few months.
